Dominant

This ad produced by the California milk processor board takes on a call back to the early 2000s popularized ad campaign of “Got Milk’ and puts a modern spin on it by satirizing the milk substitutes on the market with a jingle that says for all of the different fake milks out there, cows milk reigns supreme. This ad takes a strong dominant stance on milk and makes it clear that their views are not disputed from the producer’s standpoint. This dominant point is driven by the fact that the ad is made by the milk board.

Negotiated

While taking a dominant stance on social media and the internet, this ad can also be seen as negotiated due to the implication of this vast subject in the real world. While the ad argues for safety with children and internet access this topic has been argued from many different angles and so overall could be considered a negotiated ad, acting as a warning and to be critical of the internet, rather than rejecting its use entirely.

Oppositional

Flannel, muddy girl camo and man cards. See the ads used to sell the AR-15: The Washington Post

While this article is not oppositional in itself the content discussed deals with the AR-15’s introduction in the advertising world and how this rifle platform today carries much destruction with its existence beyond the standard implications of a gun. the evolution of the AR-15’s advertising is interesting to see in retrospect as at the time of its creation many of the controversies around guns in the US did not exist in the capacity they do today. In the eyes of many today, the advertising of a rifle such as this would seem inexcusable for the destruction it has caused in light of the numerous mass shootings within the US. Many arguments made by gun manufacturers are lost as their very grim real-world implications are too extreme to continue support of the gun. That is why this series of advertisements is oppositional as any of its intended meanings are overshadowed by the disdain people feel for guns.
