When reading Willis, much of what he was saying resonated with me. Willis is correct when he says that Disney is a way of life, with an ethos and culture. Even now in the age of the internet, Disney prevails with one of the biggest streaming services to date. Disney was able to take heavy hitters like Starwars, and Marval and make them part of their fleet. With the addition of Fox entertainment as well, Disneys content output was pushed to the max. Other than content itself, Disney has a way of collecting fans who will pass on their love of the corporation for generations. Giroux’s writing also strikes a cord within me, however in retrospect may not hold up as much today depending on your perspective. Much of Disneys output during their renaissance of the 90s was written with a narrow western view in mind. Disney created films which had a rigid structure that focused more on vague concepts and americanzied ideas over the inclusion of characters with a strong cultural identity wether it be religion, race, ethnicity, sexuality, or gender. Since writing this however, Companies like Pixar have had a huge impact on Disneys content and changed some of Disneys ideas on how they create characters, and craft their stories. Pixar was a studio that emphasized individuality and in its infancy made an effort to include diverse perspective. This set in motion a shift in the ideals of western animation. With this in mind, Disney and Pixars partnership has led to a direction of cultural inclusion with films like Encanto, Luca, Soul, Coco, and Turning Red. While this is merely a scratch in cultural inclusion, it reads as a refreshing turning of the page in Disneys long history as a film corporation.
